The bell is one of the oldest musical instrument in the world. Unconditionally bells have their own peculiarities in different countries. In Russian the word “bell” is spoken like “kolokol”. The etymology of this word dates back to the Old Indian word “kalakalas”, that means “noise”, “shouts”. In Greek the word “kaleo” means “call”. The Roman Catholics said “kalare”, that meant “to assemble”.

Ringing of bells makes always the feeling of magic strength, wizardry and mystery. This impression is made not so much by clam as by clash of the bell. Bells, which played a certain role in Russian history have given occasion to many beautiful legends.

Some short information
Embodiments of bells are truly incalculable. We can tell some interesting facts about bells.

It is known, bells were used in the capacity of money in old times in China. In the 16th -11th centuries BC people used shells of cowries instead of money, these shells were brought from the southern seas. At the turn of the 2-1 centuries BC their bronze copies were spread, that was the first metal money in China. Afterwards people learnt to cast bronze plates, bells, knifes and mattocks, which were used as money.

But the residents of the Celestial Empire were not unique by such using of bells, because the Kelts used them in Western Europe before coined money were put into operation. The ways of bells are inscrutable! As things turned out, bells can be found even on flea markets. An old bronze bell was recently bought in Dresden. A coat of arms and a phrase “DIEUET MON DROIT” were displayed upon its surface.

It was found, that the king's motto and the arms of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland were engraved on the bell. This motto means: “ The Lord and my right”. Richard 1 used this phrase 1198 in the capacity of a password and Henry 6 used it as the king's motto of Great Britain. It is interesting, that this a French motto, although it was used by the ruling class of England and Henry 6 was the king of France at the same time. The coat of arms illustrates the British lion and the Scottish unicorn. There is a shield between them, on which 3 lions of England, the Scottish lion and a harp of Ireland should be depicted. A thong with a buckle girdles the shield, that is a symbolical picture of a garter as a sign of the oldest supreme Order of the Garter. The lion and the unicorn lean against the ribbon with the motto of English kings, a king’s crown unites the lion and the unicorn. Unfortunately the way of coming of this bell to Dresden is a mystery.

A bell of feelings was recently founded in Italian foundry Capanni. The idea of its creation was expressed by the Danish painter Eric Andersen. A bell has 9 different colours, each of them symbolize a certain feeling of a person. Black means pain, white-rest, lilac- nostalgia, red-love, violet –pessimism, green- optimism, grey- confusion, blue- loneliness, yellow- anger. But this is not the only singularity of the bell. Each colour has its own sound and a tone, which can be elicited by the definite hammer. This bell hangs on a frame, which form is similar with the cupola of a cathedral. The painter expressed his idea so: “ This bell is devoted to the main personal feelings and it is so created, that 9 persons could use it at the same time and perhaps they could amount to hamony.

Bells can also march in step with technological advances. By the first automobile of Henry Ford the horn was made by a bell , which looked like a cored hemisphere. By the end of the 19th century a single bell or double bells were fixed on the front outward side of production vehicles. The driver could signal only when it was necessary, that was more functional, than continuous ringing of rigs.

By the European cars people used a horn instead of bells. Its harsh sound was more effective than long ringing of a bell by a high-speed automobile. That’s why horns supplanted bells by the American automobiles. By slow private electrical automobiles bells were used even during the 20th century.
